I have utilized information on the dynamics of different church sizes for many years in interim ministry and in coaching congregations. These dynamics might be shifting as the Church goes through accelerated change, but for now, I think these ways of understanding the roles of clergy and lay leaders, entry points into the system for newcomers, connection points between members, and the levels of complexity and formality in congregational functioning are the best we have.
Which is why it has surprised me that every time I search online for visuals of these church sizes, nothing particularly helpful comes up. I have found some graphics that are either overly complicated, obtuse, or not aesthetically pleasing. After my most recent search, I decided it was time to make my own slides, which I am sharing below along with brief descriptions of each church size. (You will recognize the pastoral and program size blurbs from Tuesday’s post, but I thought it could be helpful to include them here as well.)
