The curriculum at my seminary required two years of contextual education, the first of which was in a non-church setting. My placement was Atlanta Alliance of Developmental Disabilities, a non-profit organization that provided a range of services for people with developmental disabilities and their families. My classmates and I were each paired with an elementary school student for friendship and mutual learning. Every week we would spend time in our student’s home, school, or community, then the seminarians would gather for related theological reflection.
